I prefer environmental portraits; these will show people in their own environment where they feel more comfortable, and where they are more likely to be themselves. This could be in their own home, or at their place of work, or at a place of their choice. If they are occupied with something, so much the better, sometimes just with their own thoughts. I would rather just observe this than contrive. All these portraits are unposed.
I simply spend time with the people, usually just sitting and talking with them; I'll take pictures now and then.
I've shot many portraits for various publications. Often a particular type of portrait might be required quickly by a picture editor, and I've supplied pictures in this way. But every person is different, and this is just as much a part of the resulting picture as the time it takes. Sometimes it is finished quickly, and sometimes it takes a little longer.
The photographs are shown in no particular order.
